ICCCA at COP-14 - 5/12/2008
On 5 December 2008 ICCCA held a side event at the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP 14) in Poznan, Poland. The results of ICCCA's groundbreaking work were shared and discussed with all interested parties.
The event was chaired by Dr Lu Xuedu from the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). Four speakers gave presentations to an audience of a over 45 delegates representing negotiating parties, NGOs and academia.
Dr Nafees Meah from the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) introduced the project and set its achievements in the wider political context, stressing the collaborative nature of the project both at the political and the academic level.
Professor Lin Erda of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science (CAAS) also highlighted the collaborative nature of the project, and provided background to the project's Phase I (2001-2004)and Phase II (2005-2008). Click here to view Prof. Lin's presentation
Dr. Xiong Wei's presentation provided a detailed look at the integrated analysis of future national cereal production conducted during Phase II and reviewed the methods, results and issues raised. This included setting out the assumptions of the analysis and outlining some of the key factors underpinning the results.
Dr Declan Conway's talk focused on the project's work in the autonomous region of Ningxia Hui, particularly the work carried out with local stakeholders. Dr. Conway outlined the process that led to the design of a framework to devise adaptation policy, and set out how it was applied to obtain an adaptation strategy for Ningxia's agriculture sector.
A question and answer session followed. This addressed, inter alia, the importance of bilateral collaboration, the mix of expertise within the project, the challenge of balancing the requirements of the users against the information provided by the models, and the policy impacts of the project in China and beyond.
